The Portrait
She smiles out at me from the yellowed photograph. Her grin is wide but her eyes are solemn. It’s as though she knows I will die out here, another dirty face, cold and dead amongst the trenches. Her sad eyes are the only thing keeping me alive through this Hun winter and its frozen mud. I must live to see her eyes smile again.
